PDI International Celebrates 5th Annual Be the Difference Day® with Community Support in the UK and Italy

PDI International, a global leader in infection prevention and control solutions, proudly marked its 5th annual Be the Difference Day® with a powerful display of hands-on community service across North Northamptonshire, UK, and Milan, Italy.

Held on Thursday, 3 July (UK) and Friday, 12 July (Italy), this annual initiative empowers PDI associates to step away from their usual roles and dedicate time to giving back through volunteering, community improvement projects, and charitable donations.

Over 100 Volunteers Making a Meaningful Impact

More than 100 PDI International associates participated this year, supporting a variety of local charities, councils, and non-profit organisations. Their collective efforts included everything from litter picking and gardening, to renovating community spaces, and delivering essential supplies to local support services.

Community Projects in Corby, UK

At Lakelands Hospice, PDI volunteers revitalised garden areas, cleaned and valeted the hospice minibus, and organised a community litter pick. The team collected 38 full bags of litter on a walk from PDI HQ to The Sondes Arms restaurant, raising £380 for the hospice through a donation pledge of £10 per bag.

Meanwhile, another team transformed the Kingswood Neighbourhood Centre, repainting busy communal areas and fully rejuvenating the garden. The result? A safer, brighter space for youth groups, family sessions, and community events.

“Your work, repainting the main entrance and beautifully landscaping the garden, has made a real and lasting impact,” said Lynn Johnston, Kingswood Neighbourhood Centre. “We’re incredibly grateful for the food donations that will go directly to local families in need.”

Additionally, associates delivered essential items to Corby Homeless Project and Corby Foodbank, ensuring that vulnerable members of the community continue to receive vital support.

“Thank you all for thinking about us once again, and for your incredible generosity,” said Martin Langford, Manager at Corby Foodbank.

Making a Difference in Casorezzo, Italy

In Casorezzo, located in the Metropolitan City of Milan, PDI teams, supported by the local council, took to the streets, parks, and public buildings for a large-scale community clean-up. Associates split into six teams and took part in litter picking, gardening, and maintenance activities to enhance the town’s shared spaces.

Following the day’s work, volunteers gathered for a communal lunch at the local municipality function room, where they were honoured by the presence of the Mayor and Vice Mayor, who thanked PDI International for their continued commitment to local community development.

A Culture of Corporate Social Responsibility

“Be the Difference Day® is a powerful reminder of the impact we can make when we come together with purpose,” said David Gueundjian, President & CEO at PDI International. “We’re proud to support the incredible organisations that strengthen our communities every day.”

Be the Difference Day® exemplifies PDI International’s commitment to corporate social responsibility, creating a global culture of compassion, teamwork, and local engagement. The event continues to grow year on year, further reinforcing PDI’s mission to not only protect lives through infection prevention, but also enrich the communities it serves.

PDI International celebrates its fourth Be the Difference® Day

On Thursday 4th July, PDI International, a global leader in infection prevention and control solutions based in Corby, celebrated its fourth Be the Difference Day®. This day represents an opportunity for associates to give back to their local communities. In honour of this day, associates donated their time to various causes across Corby.

Over 30+ associates were divided into 4 teams to support 3 local charities. Teams 1, 2 and 3 supported Lakelands Hospice, an independent charity that provides palliative and end-of-life care, free of charge for people in Corby and surrounding areas. The hospice does not receive any statutory funding from the NHS or the government, so all of its funding comes from the generosity of the people, to assist in the care of its patients and their families.

Team 1 were tasked with a DIY overhaul of the hospice grounds, which involved painting, weeding, planting, hedge cutting and more. Team 2 were tasked with sorting Lakeland Hospice’s Warehouse and Donation Station. Finally, team 3 embarked on a charity litter pick, starting at PDI HQ and finishing at Lakelands Hospice. For every bag of litter collected, PDI donated £10 per bag. In total, 15 full bags of litter were collected, raising £150 for the hospice! The teams were luckier than last year as the sun beamed all day long.

Volunteer Co-ordinator, Jackie Henry said “it’s amazing how much a team can achieve, and I know how pleased the hospice, warehouse staff and volunteers were with your team’s support for your Be the Difference Day!”

The cost-of-living crisis has continued to force many individuals and families into homelessness due to the rising rents, and lack of affordable housing paired with household bills and necessities rising. To help aid these individuals and families, team 4 did a “supermarket sweep” and dropped off food and personal hygiene products at Encompass, the Corby Homeless Project and Corby Foodbank, a charity that provides short-term food crisis support to people in Corby and the surrounding villages.

Marketing Manager, Nina Smith who took part in the supermarket sweep commented, “It was a very humbling experience and made us reflect how life can change for people so quickly; thank goodness for charities like Encompass who are able to provide the necessary support to get people back up on their feet and feel that they do have a purpose.”

At PDI International we make local, and we support local.

How we’re taking steps towards a more sustainable future for healthcare

A green space with a clear sphere with the countries on the globe opaqued so that they are visible to show How we’re taking steps towards a more sustainable future for healthcare

Nearly a year ago, we embarked on an exciting journey by teaming up with Positive Planet, marking a significant step in our commitment to reducing carbon emissions and embracing sustainability in healthcare. Today, as the world grapples with the urgent need for collective action to build a more sustainable future for our planet, we’re proud to share some of the remarkable progress we’ve made so far.

Read on to find out more.

Carbon reduction plan: our path to net zero

The sustainability agenda in healthcare is ramping up, and for good reason. The UK government’s ambitious target for all businesses to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 underscores the collective responsibility we share in shaping a more sustainable future for our planet.

The NHS Net Zero Supplier Roadmap outlines how suppliers like us can align with this ambitious target. Through our ongoing partnership with Positive Planet, we’re excited to announce that PDI International has completed our Carbon Reduction Plan. This plan not only identifies our current carbon footprint but also lays out a clear pathway to achieving net zero emissions.

Here are PDI, we aim to achieve net zero emissions by 2045 across all scopes of emissions (scopes 1, 2, and 3). We remain committed to playing our part in creating a more sustainable and healthier future for healthcare.

NHS evergreen assessment

We are pleased to have completed the NHS Evergreen Sustainable Supplier Assessment. The Assessment is a self-assessment and reporting tool and resulted in us receiving a Level 1: Publicly committed to net zero carbon and engaged with sustainability. This is key to supporting us to understand how we align to the NHS’s long-term sustainability priorities and the pathway to progress.

Did you know the supply chain of the NHS accounts for more than 60% of its total carbon footprint? Given the substantial contribution of the NHS supply chain, it’s clear that NHS suppliers have a critical part to play in helping the NHS achieve its net-zero target by 2045.

The Evergreen Assessment is one of several NHS initiatives aimed at supporting its support net zero and wider sustainability objectives. We are proud to be taking proactive steps to support the NHS to achieve these ambitions, including those set out in the NHS Net Zero Supplier Roadmap.

Carbon Literacy Training – driving change!

We’re pleased to share that several of our associates have recently attained their Carbon Literacy certification, demonstrating their understanding of climate change science and their commitment to driving positive change in this critical area.

As a part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability, we’re excited to announce that we’ll be extending The Carbon Literacy Project certification to our broader teams, with the invaluable support of Positive Planet. With the growing awareness of the impacts of everyday activities on the environment, this programme offers excellent pathways towards becoming part of the solution.

By fostering a culture of carbon literacy across our organisation, we aim to empower staff to make informed decisions and take meaningful actions to reduce their carbon footprint.

Made in Britain accredited!

We’re excited to announce that we’ve renewed our membership with Made in Britain – official, reinforcing our commitment to manufacturing locally in Corby, Northamptonshire, where the majority of our products are proudly made – helping our customers minimise their carbon footprint!

This collaboration is a significant step towards ensuring simple and consistent recycling guidance across all our products available in the UK. By embracing OPRL Limited‘s renowned recycling labels, we aim to empower our end-users with clear and actionable information to make sustainable choices effortlessly.

Becoming Paperless!

Becoming paperless is a significant step in our sustainability journey. By eliminating the printing of brochures, product sheets, and other materials, and transitioning to digital distribution via our online sales enablement platform Showell, we are taking further proactive measures to reduce our environmental impact! Going paperless means we’re doing our part to protect the planet. Plus, it’s more efficient and saves resources. It’s all part of our commitment to being environmentally responsible and efficient in everything we do, and it’s a step towards reaching our bigger sustainability goals.

The Future

Our journey towards sustainability is ongoing. As we continue to add more sustainable solutions into our healthcare range and improve our overall business practices, we are committed to playing our part in protecting people and building a greener, more sustainable future for all.

Embracing the spirit of Giving Back at PDI International

In the midst of the significant challenges brought about by the global pandemic in 2020, PDI International embarked on a journey close to our hearts: the Giving Back initiative.

As a company, dedicated to combating preventable infections in healthcare, the onset of the pandemic only heightened the urgency of our mission. In 2020, amidst all the chaos and uncertainty swirling around us, PDI International decided to take a stand for something truly special: giving back.

Our decision to launch our ‘Giving Back’ initiative was fuelled by two significant factors. Firstly, the pandemic underscored the critical importance of our work in infection prevention within healthcare settings. When the pandemic started, it’s fair to say that we found ourselves positioned to make a meaningful difference during these trying times.

Secondly, giving back resonated deeply with our core mission of “Be The Difference.” For us, it extends beyond our daily operations; it’s a reflection of our commitment to creating a positive impact, both within our organisation and in the broader community.

Throughout the past year, we’ve been privileged to receive so much support and kindness from those around us. It’s only fitting that we also seized this opportunity to pay it forward in meaningful ways.

Here are some of the ways we’ve been giving back over the past few years:

Donations

Since 2021, we are proud to have donated more than £22,000 to local, national, and global charities chosen by our colleagues. These include organisations such as MIND UK, Macmillan Cancer Support, Dogs Trust, and global causes like Save the Children International and Elisecare.

Fundraising Activities

We’ve organised various fundraising activities such as Christmas jumper selfies, quizzes, coffee mornings, PDI Junior drawing activities, and games to raise funds for different causes that are close to our hearts.

Gifts in Kind

We’ve sent pallets of products such as hand wipes and disinfectant surface wipes to NGOs like Elise Care, which provides emergency medical and psychological assistance to civilian populations rescued in conflict zones. Additionally, we’ve donated unwanted items to Cancer Research UK (CRUK), and food/personal hygiene items to local organisations like Corby Homeless Project and Corby Foodbank.

Volunteerism

In July 2023, we were proud to celebrate our third Be The Difference Day, giving our associates in the UK, Italy and Switzerland an amazing opportunity to exemplify our unique culture, give back to our communities, and impact even more lives around us. In the UK, our associates spent the day at Lakeland Hospice, an independent charity that provides palliative and end-of-life care for the people in Corby and surrounding areas. This day continues to represent a collective commitment to meaningfully engage, educate, and give back to the communities PDI associates live in and work in.

Every interaction, every gesture, and every effort – they all reflect our unwavering commitment to making a difference. At PDI International, giving back is more than just a notion – it’s woven into the very fabric of who we are. We come to work each day with an enthusiasm to transform lives, whether it be a patient, a healthcare worker, a guest, a neighbour, or a person in need. It’s about spreading kindness, touching lives, and creating ripples of positivity wherever we go. Our Giving Back initiative is just one way we put this into action, and we’re thrilled to share it with you!

PDI International celebrates its third Be the Difference® Day

On Friday, 14th July, PDI International, a global leader in infection prevention products and service solutions based in Corby, celebrated its third Be the Difference® day. This day represents the opportunity for associates to give back to their local communities. In honour of this day, associates donated their time to various causes across Corby.

Our associates spent the day at Lakeland Hospice, an independent charity that provides palliative and end-of-life care, free of charge for the people in Corby and surrounding areas. The hospice does not receive any statutory funding from the NHS or the government, so all of its funding comes from the generosity of the people to assist in the care of its patients and their loved ones. The team were tasked with painting, gardening, fixing a gazebo roof and general maintenance of the hospice grounds. The team persevered in the rainy weather to achieve the best ahead of summer events planned by the hospice.

The cost-of-living crisis has forced many individuals and families into homelessness due to the rising rents, low wages, and lack of affordable housing paired with household bills and necessities rising has created a perfect storm with no end in sight. These individuals and families rely on charities such as Encompass, the Corby Homeless Project to help access emergency accommodation and food banks. Donations of necessities, including food and personal hygiene products, were donated to their residents. We donated almost 48kg of foodstuffs to the Corby Foodbank, a charity that provides short-term food crisis support to people in Corby and the surrounding villages.

Corby Foodbank Manager, Martin Langford said, “Close to 3,500 people, including more than 1,300 children within Corby and the surrounding villages have required support over the past 12 months which in turn, equated to just over a 30% increase in people accessing our service year on year.  A huge thanks to everyone at PDI International, all donations are gratefully welcomed and received and in turn, will be used to support our clients moving forward.”

Donations of critical items, such as used clothing, blankets, books, and toys, were also dropped off at Cancer Research’s superstore in Corby.

President and CEO at PDI International, David Gueundjian said, “Our involvement with the Northamptonshire community goes back almost 20 years now, and we are very proud to have made Corby a very important part of our international growth plans.  PDI International’s mission goes beyond business, and our third International Be the Difference Day has given our associates in the UK an amazing opportunity to exemplify our unique culture, give back to our communities, and impact even more lives around us.”

PDI International partners with Positive Planet

PDI International is thrilled to announce its partnership with Positive Planet as the company takes significant strides towards minimising its carbon emissions and building a sustainable future.

Positive Planet, a leading organisation dedicated to environmental initiatives, helps organisations with genuine net zero aspirations to create and implement carbon reduction plans.

Over the coming months they will help PDI turn its sustainability goals into meaningful action and help deliver positive impact for people and the planet.

This will involve carrying out accurate carbon footprint measurements and then developing, monitoring and embedding a successful sustainability programme into the company’s corporate strategy. They will also help PDI introduce a carbon reduction programme and help the company to engage and educate employees ensuring sustainability is firmly embedded into company’s culture.

Nina Smith, Marketing Manager, said: “It’s very important to us as a business to be able to pinpoint the carbon hotspots and then use this information to develop a carbon reduction plan, aiming for Carbon Neutrality and then ultimately Net Zero and obtain the ISO 14001 certification.

“To become Carbon Literate will allow us to create a culture of sustainability and embed climate action across all functions of PDI International and highlight to our customers and stakeholders that we are leading in our sector regarding our environmental sustainability.”

Whilst PDI have now partnered with Positive Planet, the company have been taking important steps in addressing sustainability within the business for several years.

For example, today 99% of the company’s energy supply comes from renewable sources, they have installed recycling bins, energy efficient lighting, upgraded inefficient equipment, and introduced a working from home scheme.

They have also introduced a waste register system and water management policies.

On the product side, PDI is working tirelessly on delivering solutions that are more sustainable for our planet.  Examples include offering more environmentally friendly fabrics, formulations and packaging as well as partnering with Made In Britain to champion British manufactured products.

Nina added: “This is a very exciting time for us as a company and we are delighted to be working with Positive Planet to move to the next level. We have appointed champions across the business and are thrilled with how well everyone has got behind the initiative. It’s important for us to be open and honest about the progress we are making during our journey to reduce our carbon footprint and we are looking forward to reporting about our plans, milestones and successes in the coming months.

PDI’s sustainability targets have been inspired by the NHS, which is working towards becoming the world’s first net zero national health service.

PDI EMEA appointed the official UK Healthcare representative for WellAir’s Novaerus Air Cleaning Solutions

Northamptonshire, UK:  PDI International, leader in infection prevention products and solutions, today announced its official partnership in the UK with Irish-based company Novaerus, part of WellAir, developers of innovative airborne infection control devices.

Preventable infections cost NHS England annually £2.7 billion¹.  Improved hand hygiene and surface cleaning will undoubtedly contribute to reduced hospital infections and associated costs, but it may not suffice. Hospitals need to deploy multiple layers of defense to reduce the risk of transmission in which air disinfection plays a vital role in safeguarding healthcare professionals and patients.

WellAir’s Novaerus’s air disinfection “plug and play” systems are powered by its patented NanoStrike™ technology – a transformational method of air disinfection that bursts airborne pathogen cells which has been clinically proven to:

  • Inactivate microorganisms in the air that lead to viral and bacterial infection
  • Ensures the pathogen cell cannot self-heal and become viable as an infectious agent once again
  • Reduce dust, mold spores, and pollen that trigger asthma and allergies

The technology is safe for continuous use around vulnerable patients and staff and is proven to inactivate airborne pathogens on contact. These devices can be easily mobilized in high-risk situations like surgeries or operated continuously in large patient wards, ICUs, emergency rooms, and IVF labs.

Within PDI International’s range of cleaning and disinfection surface wipes, automated room disinfection technology, skin disinfection and patient care solutions, the incorporation of Novaerus’s range of air cleaning devices in the UK addresses the need for an integrated approach to infection prevention to drive the reduction of HCAIs.

“Our collaboration with Novaerus in the UK supports our mission to reduce preventable infections, control associated costs, and ultimately help save lives across the healthcare continuum of care and beyond.” said David Gueundjian, President and Chief Executive Officer, PDI International. “We are proud of our 40-year legacy in assisting the healthcare industry with products and solutions that help reduce the risk of infections, and excited to bring another innovative technology to patients and healthcare institutions.”

Felipe Soberon, WellAir’s Chief Science Officer, adds, “With its extensive expertise as an infection prevention innovator, PDI International is well positioned to help us further progress the adoption of innovative and powerful airborne infection control devices. Our recent product testing conducted by the Academic Health Science Networks (AHSN), as part of the National Health Services Environmental decontamination framework evaluation in the UK, has demonstrated tremendous efficacy against airborne bioburden. We are pleased that PDI can bring these ideal solutions to hospitals and healthcare environments.”
