PDI International hosts CPD-accredited webinar highlighting importance of air decontamination in healthcare environments

Northamptonshire, UK: A free CPD-accredited webinar for IPC professionals, Facilities and Estates will be hosted by PDI International to highlight why effective air decontamination is crucial to protect the health of both healthcare workers and patients in hospitals and support staff in implementing best practices.

Scheduled for Wednesday 1st March 2023 at 10:30am (GMT), Carole Hallam, Independent Infection Prevention and Control Nurse Consultant, will present on the importance of indoor air quality in healthcare environments and how the use of innovative technologies can be leveraged to help to tackle the risk of airborne infection, a topic that is becoming increasingly important in the face of the covid-19 pandemic and the rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

The webinar, titled ‘When Hand Hygiene and Cleaning are not enough; is it time to talk about Air Decontamination?’ aims to provide education and support to IPC and professionals on how to take the best approach to mitigate the spread of airborne infections, and why maintaining good levels or air quality needs to be part of any effective infection control and prevention programme.

Carole Hallam, who will be leading the session, commented: “While hand hygiene is known to be one of the most important ways of controlling the spread of infections, air decontamination is also crucial in any hospital environment because the air can be a route of a variety of important disease-causing pathogens, without any clear signs. If not effectively filtered, it may cause a risk to the lives of staff and patients, especially those who are immunocompromised. Healthcare staff meticulously cleaning the premises clearly goes a long way to mitigating the risk of infection to anyone who steps foot in a hospital; however, it only goes so far.”

Infection control remains a major challenge to healthcare professionals worldwide, with over 4 million people are affected by HAIs every year across Europe. It’s estimated that over half of hospital acquired infections (HAI) are preventable and could be eliminated through evidence-based infection prevention and control strategies.[1]

Although contact-spread is known to be the principle route of transmission for most infections, it’s also acknowledged that the contribution of airborne pathogens to the spread of infection is likely to be greater than is currently recognised.[2]

Some virus droplets, like Covid-19, are small enough that they can remain in the air for up to three hours and can be carried by movement of air due to their size.

In the UK, HAIs are estimated to cost the NHS approximately £1 billion a year.[3]  Airborne transmission is more prevalent in healthcare settings due to overburdened hospitals and the presence of immunocompromised patients.[4]

Carole adds: “The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the significance of having solid IPC procedures in place. Our webinar will highlight some of the important challenges that experienced IPC professionals face and how to best overcome these issues.”

PDI International is dedicated to leading the fight against preventable infections in healthcare and across communities. They help provide education ‘on the go’ to busy healthcare professionals in meaningful and engaging ways, to help them make a difference in the world.

IPS Conference 2022 at a Glance

IPS Conf 2022

Bournemouth, UK: Last month our UK healthcare sales team, exhibited at the Infection Prevention Society’s 14th annual conference in Bournemouth (IP2022Conf). Keynote speakers included Dr Jon Otter, Dr Didier Pillet and Professor Jennie Wilson who delivered a range of informative talks on matters including “The importance of choosing our words carefully when communicating HCAI and AMR”, “From clean hands to Clean Hospitals: a worldwide vision” and “Practical Sustainability in the NHS Chain”.

The conference was the ideal event to officially launch our partnership with Irish-based company WellAir, developers of Novaerus’ air decontamination units to over 500 healthcare professionals. The Novaerus’ air units are ‘plug and play’ systems that are powered by its patented NanoStrike™ technology – a method of air disinfection that bursts pathogen cells, clinically proven to inactivate microorganisms and reduce dust, mould spores, and pollen that trigger asthma and allergies. The units quickly became a brilliant talking point for our team, especially when paired with our automated room disinfection system HyperDRYMist®, a patented solution which delivers high-level disinfection in as little as 45 minutes without the need to seal a room.

Two-in-one cleaning and disinfectant wipe Super Sani-Cloth®, otherwise known as “purple top” generated plenty of chatter thanks to its 1-minute total contact time, excellent efficacy, and compatibility with more than 600 medical devices and of course its “Made in UK” stamp to support NHS carbon net zero goals.

Other product highlights included showcasing our diverse range of Prevantics® skin disinfection solutions, including our recently launched 2% CHG Applicators and Swabsticks.

In addition, our 100% plastic free antibacterial Hygea hand wipes were a huge hit. Made in the UK, our hand wipes are 100% biodegradable, and clinically proven to kill 99.999% of bacteria and viruses.

“IPC2022 was the ideal opportunity to speak with our frontline healthcare workers, understand their current challenges and provide suitable and clinically proven solutions to address those issues and make their lives easier and more importantly, safer”, said Nina Smith, Marketing Manager at PDI International.

Healthcare professionals were handed out our reusable PDI International tote bags filled with our signature #purpletop pens, and informative literature including several Bitesize Learning infographic posters aimed to provide IPC education in an engaging and fun way.

PDI EMEA appointed the official UK Healthcare representative for WellAir’s Novaerus Air Cleaning Solutions

Northamptonshire, UK:  PDI International, leader in infection prevention products and solutions, today announced its official partnership in the UK with Irish-based company Novaerus, part of WellAir, developers of innovative airborne infection control devices.

Preventable infections cost NHS England annually £2.7 billion¹.  Improved hand hygiene and surface cleaning will undoubtedly contribute to reduced hospital infections and associated costs, but it may not suffice. Hospitals need to deploy multiple layers of defense to reduce the risk of transmission in which air disinfection plays a vital role in safeguarding healthcare professionals and patients.

WellAir’s Novaerus’s air disinfection “plug and play” systems are powered by its patented NanoStrike™ technology – a transformational method of air disinfection that bursts airborne pathogen cells which has been clinically proven to:

  • Inactivate microorganisms in the air that lead to viral and bacterial infection
  • Ensures the pathogen cell cannot self-heal and become viable as an infectious agent once again
  • Reduce dust, mold spores, and pollen that trigger asthma and allergies

The technology is safe for continuous use around vulnerable patients and staff and is proven to inactivate airborne pathogens on contact. These devices can be easily mobilized in high-risk situations like surgeries or operated continuously in large patient wards, ICUs, emergency rooms, and IVF labs.

Within PDI International’s range of cleaning and disinfection surface wipes, automated room disinfection technology, skin disinfection and patient care solutions, the incorporation of Novaerus’s range of air cleaning devices in the UK addresses the need for an integrated approach to infection prevention to drive the reduction of HCAIs.

“Our collaboration with Novaerus in the UK supports our mission to reduce preventable infections, control associated costs, and ultimately help save lives across the healthcare continuum of care and beyond.” said David Gueundjian, President and Chief Executive Officer, PDI International. “We are proud of our 40-year legacy in assisting the healthcare industry with products and solutions that help reduce the risk of infections, and excited to bring another innovative technology to patients and healthcare institutions.”

Felipe Soberon, WellAir’s Chief Science Officer, adds, “With its extensive expertise as an infection prevention innovator, PDI International is well positioned to help us further progress the adoption of innovative and powerful airborne infection control devices. Our recent product testing conducted by the Academic Health Science Networks (AHSN), as part of the National Health Services Environmental decontamination framework evaluation in the UK, has demonstrated tremendous efficacy against airborne bioburden. We are pleased that PDI can bring these ideal solutions to hospitals and healthcare environments.”

On Friday, 8th July, PDI International, a global leader in infection prevention products and service solutions based in Corby, celebrated its second Be the Difference Day.  This day represents a collective commitment to meaningfully engage, educate, and give back to the communities PDI associates live in and work in.

Various teams took part in diverse activities in the UK, Italy and Switzerland.  One team spent the day at Lakeland Hospice in Corby.  They were tasked with carrying out a “DIY overhaul” of their outdoor space, which included painting, gardening, clearing out, hedge cutting, and a general tidy up of the hospice grounds.

Jackie Henry, volunteer coordinator for the hospice said, “The impact and difference you’ve made is amazing.  I know that our patients enjoy sitting and reflecting in beautiful surroundings.  It will be great for patients to start reusing the summer house now that it’s been refreshed with a coat of paint.”

The Corby Homeless Project also received a visit, with colleagues presenting the team with much needed food and personal hygiene supplies for their residents.

Donations of critical items, such as used clothing, blankets, books and toys were also dropped off at Cancer Research’s superstore in Corby.

In Manchester, a second team spent the day at Simply Cycling, helping disabled people have fun and grow in confidence whilst riding adapted bikes whilst a third team spent their time at homeless charity Lifeshare, participating in a range of activities such as food preparation, clearing, cleaning and painting.

In Europe, colleagues donated supplies to foodbanks, took part in local clean-ups, and spent time playing cards and baking for their loved ones.

As the number of covid cases continue to rise, as part of Be the Difference day, PDI International also donated surface and hand disinfectant wipes to all the charities involved to prevent the spread of infection in local communities.
